Fishing the New River The New River provides ample opportunity for fishing, and features muskie and catfish, and is well known for small mouth bass, in fact many North Carolina and Virgina trophy small mouth bass are recorded yearly. While enjoying fishing on the New River you can also take in the incredible scenery, and you are sure to see plenty of other wildlife. You may even get a glimpse of a Pileated Woodpecker (think Woody Woodpecker) with its distinctive red-crested head. Fishing the New River is sure to provide you with memories to last a lifetime. Our 5 mile canoe trips offer the best opportunity for fishing known in the New River with its gentle Class I and Class II rapids. It does not matter if you have a fishing license from North Carolina or Virgina, since both are good for 21 miles up river, starting where the North and South Forks of the New River converge, and 15 miles down river, ending where the Little River empties into the New River. Don't forget, the New River Campstore is stocked with artificial lures and live bait for your fishing fun, and we can assist you in finding the rocks and deeper slower water areas that small mouth bass love so much. We do not sell fishing licenses, however we can assist you in finding local establishments where you can obtain a fishing license. |

Getting a Fishing LicenseBefore heading out to fish you must obtain a license whether you are a resident or non-resident, however, on the 4th of July anyone can fish without a license, but just that one day only each year. A basic license authorizes a person to fish for the duration of the license. In addition you also need a special license to fish in designated trout waters. A comprehensive license allows fishing in designated trout waters and in trout waters on game land. Licenses are available at area fishing outfitters, and at hardware and department stores that offer sporting goods.
